CASE STUDY

The original body wash bottle launched in 2023, however it was designed in 2021 before the refill material was fully locked in. At the time the material tolerances were such that the only solution that worked was a three part design where you placed the refill in, closed the case and then screwed on the pump.

Three years on and a switch of the refill material meant a more simple two-part case could be adopted. Having recently updated the deodorant case to a softer more compact design, we took the same approach with the body wash bottle.

One key factor was ensuring backwards and forwards compatibility. New refills needed to fit into old cases, and old refills into new cases. It was vital that no one would need to dispose of their case to use new refills. This relied on a close partnership between all parties involved, clear communication and technical drawings and a whole lot of testing.

Vivomer – The sustainable plastic alternative

At the heart of this project is Vivomer, developed by Shellworks. This compostable material is a breakthrough in sustainable design. what is key about Vivomer is that it fully biodegrades in compost soil or marine environments, leaving no microplastics behind, yet it remains highly stable in use. It can be molded like most plastics so it is lightweight, versatile and - as in this case - can often be a simple drop-in alternative to plastic packaging. The added benefit is that the company is based in the UK, enabling both development and manufacturing to be on-shored; enabling supply chains to be more agile and reducing shipping time, costs and impact.
